Pahalgam attack fallout: CRPF sets up 43 temporary bases in J&K | India News
New Delhi: After the Pahalgam terror attack in J&K, the CRPF has set up 43 temporary operating bases across UT, each with 16-25 personnel to track and eliminate terrorists hiding in high places, security officials said on Wednesday.The temporary bases, of which 26 are located in Kashmir division and 17 in Jammu division, sit at altitudes of 6,000 feet or more. CRPF troops, along with some J&K police personnel, use these bases for several days to launch search and attack operations against terrorists who usually use ‘dhoks’ (mud and stone huts) as temporary hideouts, awaiting instructions from their Pakistan-based handlers to carry out terrorist attacks.The CRPF has procured special equipment for this temporary base, such as tactical boots, winter jackets, sleeping bags and satellite phones.According to the information, there are currently around two local terrorists and around 100 foreign terrorists active.The first set of such temporary bases was established by the CRPF along the Pahalgam-Tral-Harwan axis in April 2025, soon after the April 2025 terrorist attack in Pahalgam. CRPF and other security forces used a base near Srinagar’s Dachigam area to zero in on the hideout of the three Pahalgam attackers, all Pakistanis. Three terrorists were eliminated in Operation Mahadev in July 2025.Prior to the Pahalgam terror attack, Pakistani terrorists took shelter in a ghetto near the tourist site of Baisaran where they shot dead 25 tourists. Soon after the attack, the terrorists fled to the nearby forest. Security forces had to scour the jungle for months before tracking their location.
