Chandigarh: Over 3,200 people were arrested in Punjab during a 72-hour-long operation against wanted criminals, police said on Wednesday.The operation, Operation Prahar-II, which began on Monday, saw the police conduct 8,278 raids on people linked to wanted criminals. The operation was launched by the Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab. Gaurav Yadav.
Senior officials visited various police districts to lead the drive in which over 2,000 police teams comprising 12,000 personnel were involved.Sharing the cumulative results of the operation, Special Director General of Police (Law and Order) Arpit Shukla said that 7,498 people have been arrested across the state, of which 3,260 have been arrested. Among those arrested are 135 declared criminals.During the operation, the police team recovered 47 weapons, 4.8 kg of heroin, 3.6 kg of opium, 42,797 narcotic pills, 68 kg of poppy husk and 3 million taka in cash, he said.Shukla said the police team made 1,450 preventive arrests, while 2,788 were verified and released after questioning.Yadav said the 72-hour-long operation had achieved its objectives beyond expectations, and the ‘Gangstran te var’ (crackdown on gangsters) campaign would continue till Punjab was free from the menace.People can anonymously report information about wanted criminals and gangsters and also share tips on crimes and criminal activities, through the Anti-Gangster Helpline number 93946-93946.Police teams continued their anti-narcotics operation “Yudh Nasian Virudh” on the 347th day and on Wednesday arrested 164 drug smugglers and recovered 11.9 kg of heroin, 344 narcotic tablets/capsules from them.Police said that the total number of drug smugglers arrested so far has reached 49 thousand 129 people. This anti-drug campaign was launched in March 2025.
