There is no dearth of films based on the underworld of Mumbai, but there are some stories which do not make noise, but gradually make their mark. O Romeo is also a similar film. This is a story that first brings you closer to the characters and then reveals the secrets hidden between them in the second half. The pairing of Vishal Bhardwaj and Shahid Kapoor once again takes the audience on a profound, emotional and mysterious journey. Today ‘O Romeo’ has been released in theatres. The length of this film is 2 hours 59 minutes. Dainik Bhaskar has given this film a rating of 3.5 stars out of 5. How is the story of the film? The story of the film is set in 1995 Mumbai, where the game of crime and power is being played openly. Shahid Kapoor plays a dangerous contract killer named Ustra, who lives in an old ship on the seashore. He kills criminals, but he has his own rules. His relationship with Inspector Khan (Nana Patekar) is also not straightforward, but is linked to need and compulsion. Afshan (Tripti Dimri) enters the world of razors. Afshan has come to give betel nuts, but her real reason is not fully revealed in the first part of the film. This is where the suspense arises in the story. A strange relationship is formed between Ustra and Afshan, in which there is both trust and suspicion. The second part of the film reveals the real meaning of this relationship. When Afshan’s motive, Ustra’s weakness and the past of both come to the fore, the story takes full shape. This suspense prevents the film from becoming an ordinary gangster story. How is the acting of the star cast? Shahid Kapoor has played the character of Ustra very effectively. The silence on his face, the anger in his eyes and his aggression in action scenes make the character strong. There are many scenes where Shahid expresses his emotions without speaking. This can be considered one of the best performances of his career. Trupti Dimri surprises in the role of Afshan. In the first part, she appears calm and restrained, but in the second part, when the layers of her character are revealed, her confidence and anger are clearly visible. The chemistry between Shahid and Trupti does not seem artificial and takes the story forward. Avinash Tiwari leaves a menacing impression as Jalal. Nana Patekar enlivens every scene with his tough dialogues and powerful presence. Farida Jalal, Tamannaah Bhatia, Vikrant Massey and Disha Patani leave an impact even in their limited roles. How is the direction and technical side of the film? Vishal Bhardwaj does not rush the story. The first half is deliberately kept slow to build the layers of the characters. This preparation comes in handy in the second part. When the story takes its turn, the audience is already emotionally engaged. Cinematography brings alive that era of Mumbai. The dark colors, sea shore and narrow streets strengthen the mood of the story. The editing is balanced and the script maintains a balance between emotions, suspense and violence. Dialogues are short, but effective. Shahid Kapoor’s solid and powerful acting has been shown. The hidden suspense between the characters of Shahid and Tripti opens in the second part of the story. The balance between music and dialogues is good. The first half of the film may seem slow to some viewers, with some gangster characters demanding more detail. How is the music of the film? The music of the film flows with the story. Vishal Bhardwaj’s music and Gulzar’s lyrics make the songs a part of the film and not an added element. There is simplicity in romantic songs and energy in dance songs. The background music heightens the tension and emotions in many important scenes. Final Verdict, watch or not? O Romeo is a film that demands patience and also rewards it. If you go in expecting just a fast pace, the first half may seem overwhelming. But if you are interested in the story and characters, the second part will hook you. Shahid Kapoor handles the film firmly and Trupti Dimri leaves an equal impact with him. Vishal Bhardwaj’s storytelling style makes this film special.
