Calcutta: Chief Minister of Bengal Mamata Banerjee A redundant photo of Prime Minister Modi seated and the President was unearthed on Sunday Draupadi Murmu standing at an event, flagged it as “proof of who actually shows respect” while contesting his allegation that the TMC government had “grossly insulted” the President’s chair by violating a protocol in Siliguri.“Why were you sitting when he was standing?” Mamata said from her SIR protest stage. “We respect every person who holds constitutional office.”

“The prime minister attacks and insults Bengal before every election,” said the chief minister. Mamata alleged that Bengal was being singled out before the assembly elections.He asserted that the state had written to the organizers of the International Santal Conference on March 4, citing ineligibility to be a part of the event due to various reasons. “But the Center has ignored it. If something goes wrong in the event, the Center should be held responsible. Don’t blame us,” he said.The Siliguri conference, the chief minister insisted, was a private program which the state government was never asked to support. Regarding complaints about inadequate toilets and other facilities, he said the venue was under the jurisdiction of the Airports Authority of India. “The green room, too, was set up by the organizers in the AAI area. If anything has gone wrong there, it is their failure.”“We will celebrate Women’s Day a thousand times. We have been celebrating it since childhood. You have no right to criticize us,” Mamata said, criticizing the way a woman president of Bengal was treated as the prime minister called for International Women’s Day.Chief Secretary Nandini Chakraborty, who received a communication from Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan seeking an explanation for the “breach of protocol”, responded formally in the evening, sources said.The controversy has seen the opposition unite behind the TMC. Congress’ Supriya Sreenate said the President’s office should not be used to “advance the BJP’s political agenda”.
