New Delhi: The West Bengal Police on Friday arrested a lawyer accused of masterminding the entrapment of seven judicial officers in Malda district.According to PTI, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) nabbed Mofakkarul Islam from Bagdogra Airport near Siliguri when he was trying to escape. He is believed to be the main conspirator of the Kaliachak incident.The controversy stemmed from an incident on Wednesday, when a mob surrounded seven judicial officials for several hours in Malda during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll. The situation heated up after allegations of mass erasure of voters’ names surfaced.Security forces eventually intervened, using lathicharge to disperse the crowd and evacuating the officers, including the three women, to safety late at night.

The protest also spilled over to National Highway 12, a key Kolkata-Siliguri route, which was blocked by protesters demanding action on alleged removal of voter rolls.The BJP has accused the ruling Trinamool Congress of organizing the protests and inciting the mob, an allegation that has not officially responded.
