A new white paper notes that “Indian immigration to the UK has developed in four distinct waves since 1947, each corresponding to Britain’s changing economic and labor needs.” and argues that it played a central role in shaping the economy of modern BritainThe report titled “Migration of the Indian Diaspora to the UK” by Manish Tiwari of Here & Now 365 in collaboration with the Aston India Center at Aston University traces the evolution of Indian migration.According to the study, the first wave came during the post-war labor shortage, “aided by post-war immigration from India[ing] Address acute labor shortages across manufacturing, transport and public services by contributing to the foundation of the National Health Service.” The second wave followed the expulsion of Asians from East Africa in the 1970s, which “led to significant entrepreneurial activity and local economic regeneration.”Many of these families have established businesses that have revitalized the local economy.As the UK economy transitions towards a knowledge-based model, Indian immigration increasingly includes skilled professionals. The white paper estimates that “professionals of Indian origin are estimated to make up around 15% of the UK technology workforce.” The fourth wave has been described as strategically significant in the post-Brexit and post-pandemic era. “Indian professionals have become critical in addressing strategically important skills shortages,” the report said.Describing the Indian diaspora as “among the UK’s most economically successful ethnic minority groups”, the study emphasizes the community’s continued role in healthcare, technology and entrepreneurship.
