Have PNG access but not switched? Govt will stop LPG refills | India News
NEW DELHI: In a bid to wean consumers away from LPG, the government has decided to stop supply of cylinders after three months to households who have access to piped natural gas but have shied away from getting connections. India imports about 60% of its LPG needs, of which about 90% comes through the Strait of Hormuz. Although about half of the LNG requirement – converted to PNG and CNG and used in industry and power plants – is also imported, officials said its supply remains comfortable. Even rented houses where tenants currently use LPG will have to switch, a senior official said. LPG supply shall not be stopped if the authorized body issues an NOC that providing a PNG connection is not technically feasible. Officials said City Gas Distribution (CGD) companies will send a communication to LPG customers who may switch to PNG. Time frame for granting rights of way or permits to CGD organizationsWith a view to speedy expansion of the piped gas network, the government has made it mandatory for authorities to grant rights of way or permits to CGD companies within stipulated time limits, failing which approvals will be deemed granted. The order, issued under the Essential Commodities Act, focuses on reforming fast-track approvals for laying pipeline infrastructure and ensuring time-bound permits.
