Faulty I-T notices trigger confusion, dept says ignore | India News
New Delhi/Ahmedabad: The Income Tax Department It on Saturday urged taxpayers across the country to ignore emails that wrongly identified “significant transactions” under Advance Tax e Campaign (AY) 2026 27 for assessment year. The advisory comes after several individuals, including thousands in Gujarat, reported receiving notices that did not match their financial profiles. In a post on X, the department acknowledged the error and said the issue was being resolved with the service provider managing the communications system. Officials said the emails are intended as reminders to taxpayers to review information on the compliance portal—it contains incorrect or duplicate data for many recipients. “It has been reported that certain taxpayers have received emails containing incorrect details regarding ‘significant transactions’ undertaken by them as part of the ongoing Advance Tax e-campaign for AY 2026-27,” the department said, apologizing for the inconvenience and advising taxpayers to ignore it “until the issue is amicably resolved”. An official said the messages sent after pan mapping were meant to show that the tax was to be paid as advance tax, but an error resulted in “mass messages”. The fourth installment of advance tax must be paid by Sunday. In Gujarat, many taxpayers received faulty notices just a day before the deadline for the last installment of advance tax, leading to confusion. Emails contain mismatched or improbable financial details – such as GST turnover values for people who don’t have GST registration, and identical transaction values appearing for different people. CA Karim Lakhani said several taxpayers have been listed under the category of ‘significant transactions’ without any advance tax liability. “Taxpayers who do not have a GST number received notices showing their GST turnover. In many cases, the transaction value was the same for different persons. The government has now clarified the error and asked people to ignore such emails,” he said.
