Farooq survives assassination bid at wedding, gunman held | India News
Jammu/Srinagar: National Conference President Farooq Abdullah and Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Chowdhury escaped unhurt on Wednesday evening after they entered a wedding venue in Greater Kailash, Jammu with guns and opened fire before bringing him to power.Chowdhury told reporters, “Both of us are safe but now it is the responsibility of the police to say that. Sources said the arrested assailant is Kamal Singh Jamwal, who is a resident of Jammu. The police are interrogating him to find out the reason behind the attack, they said.“It was an event where a former chief minister, a present deputy CM and the chief minister’s adviser were present and a person could enter with a gun. You can understand how much security there was,” Chowdhury said.CM Omar Abdullah Says his father “shaven very close”. In a post on X, he wrote, “Details are sketchy at the moment but what is known is that a man with a loaded pistol managed to enter point blank range and discharge a shot. It was only the close security team that deflected the shot and ensured that the assassination attempt failed. There are more questions than answers at the moment, including how the NSG was able to be contained but not confined to the CM.”Omar’s advisor Nasir Aslam Wani, who witnessed how the episode unfolded, said the arrested assailant had clearly come with the intention of targeting Farooq. “He tried to fire at Farooq sahib from a revolver. I don’t want to jump to any conclusion yet. By God’s grace he was saved. He is fine and well,” Wani told TOI.
