CM Gupta, LG Sandhu attend GGSIPU convocation; 26,649 degrees conferred | India News
New Delhi: The talent and potential of today’s graduates will take the country to new heights on the global stage, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on Thursday while addressing the 18th convocation of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU). “Today’s graduates are the real drivers of Vixen India,” he said at a function organized at the university’s East Delhi campus in Surajmal Bihar. A total of 26,649 students have been awarded degrees including 124 PhD, 11 MPhil, 2,873 Masters, 22,455 Graduates, 477 MBBS and 709 MD/MS and DM/MCH degrees. Among students graduating this year, 70 percent of PhD recipients are women, university officials said. 76 gold medals and six commemorative awards were awarded to meritorious students. Speaking on the occasion, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, Lieutenant Governor of Delhi and Chancellor of GGSIPU, said that a convocation is not just the end of an academic journey but also the beginning of new responsibilities towards nation building. He said students are rapidly entering a world powered by artificial intelligence and sustainable innovation and urged them to go beyond textbook education. “Logical thinking is the real power in the age of AI and innovation,” says LG Sandhu, “Degrees must go beyond textbook knowledge.” He said that adaptability, logical thinking and the courage to innovate will be important in the coming years. Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Vixit India @2047”, he said the country needs problem-solvers who can tackle complex challenges in areas such as urban development, public health and digital governance. GGSIPU Vice-Chancellor Mahesh Verma reiterated the university’s focus on innovation, research and preparing students for a rapidly evolving world. “Proceed with responsibility, integrity and purpose,” he said. Delhi University Vice-Chancellor and All India Council for Technical Education Chairman Yogesh Singh was also present at the convocation. The Chief Minister said that the convocation reflects the years of hard work, discipline and dedication of the students. He urged the students to use their education not only for personal betterment but for the greater good of the society. He also highlighted the university’s work in emerging fields such as AI, robotics, data science and design innovation. Appreciating the university’s Atal Incubation Centre, the Chief Minister said it has supported more than 170 startups, helping the youth from being job seekers to job creators. Outlining the Delhi government’s education priorities, Gupta said the education budget has increased by Rs 19,326 crore this year. “Our aim is not only to make schools smarter, but also to ensure world-class facilities in higher education,” the chief minister said, adding that over 2,200 students were getting free coaching for competitive exams like JEE, NEET and CLAT.
