Centre reviews LPG supply situation with states, calls for tighter monitoring and security | India News
New Delhi: Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan on Wednesday chaired a review meeting with all states and Union Territories (UTs) on the LPG supply situation in view of West Asian developments and advised the state/UT brass to monitor LPG supply on any bus basis, to protect the LPG supply chain by increasing the safety of the concerned infrastructure and personnel. The meeting was called by State/UT Chief Secretaries and DGPs and Secretaries of the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Information and Broadcasting and Consumer Affairs amid public concern over restrictions on LPG supply in the market due to conflicts in West Asia.Sources told TOI that all states/UTs have been informed about the LPG Control Order dated March 8, 2026 which directs refineries and petrochemical complexes to maximize LPG production and prioritize domestic LPG supply to domestic consumers. It was clarified that restrictions on LPG distribution apply to commercial establishments including hotels and restaurants, while excluding hospitals or educational institutions from the purview of the order.All States / Union Territories were advised to ensure safety of LPG supply chain by enhancing safety for related infrastructure and personnel. They were advised to monitor local LPG supply on daily basis, take strict action against violators and maintain law and order on the ground. States / UTs were asked to conduct adequate awareness campaigns – directly and through oil marketing agencies – to curb fears and rumors about LPG shortage and to spread the word about the proactive steps taken by the government to ensure adequate availability of LPG to households.Sources said states/UTs were also advised to closely monitor social media platforms and take immediate action to remove fake news and false narratives about an alleged LPG shortage by circulating outdated or irrelevant material.Meanwhile, the Home Ministry has strengthened its control room, including nodal officers from the Ministry of I&B and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, functioning on a 24×7 basis. This provision has been made to issue fact-checks and immediate clarifications to States and Union Territories on any matter related to the current situation.
