CBFC denies role in 'John Noygan' leak, calls claims baseless

New Delhi: The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on Saturday dismissed claims that Tamil film “Jana Nayagan” was leaked from its system as “baseless and misleading”, insisting that its certification process follows a secure, access-controlled protocol. The clarification comes amid controversy over the film’s alleged online leak in high-definition format, which has sparked outrage among fans and industry stakeholders.Explaining its process, the CBFC said all films submitted for certification are secured through a Key Delivery Message (KDM) system, with password-protected access strictly controlled by the producer or filmmaker. “Without a valid KDM, the content cannot be accessed or viewed,” officials said, adding that the board does not maintain independent access after handing over the Digital Cinema Package (DCP).According to the CBFC, the DCP of “John Noigan” was formally handed over to the petitioner in Mumbai on March 17 with due acknowledgment, and ultimately remains with them, denying any violation. The controversy followed reports that the big-budget film starring Vijay was initially released online as a short five-minute clip before a full-length was leaked on piracy websites. The leaked footage includes key sequences such as the title introduction and parts of the climax, raising concerns about internal security flaws within the production or distribution chain.Director H Binoth requested the audience not to promote the leaked content, saying that each scene represents the efforts of hundreds of people. Several industry voices echoed the plea, calling for restraint and stricter enforcement against piracy. The incident has intensified calls for swift legal action, with fans demanding accountability and stricter protections. The producers are understood to be exploring options to cut losses, including advancing the release timeline.
