Beef row: Chief minister vows action against AJP nominee’s kin | India News
GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma on Sunday raised the issue of beef consumption in his election campaign, Assam National Parishad (AJP) candidate Kunki Chowdhury (27), the main Congress ally from the Guwahati Central seat, accused his parents of eating beef and uploaded a photo of it on social media.“Kunki’s mother, Sujata Gurung Chowdhury, shared posts related to eating beef and made comments hurting the sentiments of ‘traditional’ people… After the elections, I will take action against Kunki’s parents under the Cattle Prevention Act. I will accept everything, but not eating beef,” Sarma told reporters. Kunki denied the allegations, calling them “false and baseless”.Sarma added, “Forget whether Kunki wins or loses… Tell her that her parents eat beef, she is a Sanatani Hindu, and she has disowned them. If he says he is not with his parents, then I am with him.”“There is Satradhikar (head of Satra institution) in Assam. There is Kamakhya temple. Which Satradhikar will vote for him?… Shall we eat beef in front of Kamakhya, Majuli and Batdrav? AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi should apologise,” he added.Sarma claims that even members of the “Miya” community have stopped eating beef at his request and are now eating buffalo meat. Eating beef is not illegal in Assam. However, the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, prohibits cattle slaughter and sale of beef in Hindu, Jain and Sikh majority areas and within a five-km radius of religious places.
