Arijit Singh used to sing kirtan in the Gurudwara: Singer’s father told how his Sikh family from Lahore settled in Bengal?
Singer Arijit Singh’s father Surinder Singh recently told that after partition, his Sikh family moved from Lahore to Jiaganj in West Bengal. He also said that Arijit used to sing kirtan in the gurudwara in his childhood. In an interview with The Telegraph India, his father Surinder Singh told the old story of the family. He told that his ancestral home was near Lahore. After the partition of the country, his father and three brothers came to Lalgola in Murshidabad district of West Bengal. He said, “Our ancestral home was near Lahore. After Partition, my father and his three brothers came to Lalgola.” At the time of partition, like many families, they too had to leave everything and start from a new place. He used to do clothes business. Later the family settled in Jiaganj, a small town in Murshidabad district. “They were cloth traders and somehow reached Jiaganj and built their house on the banks of the river,” Surinder Singh said. From Lalgola the family gradually settled in Jiaganj. Some of his relatives started living in Punjabipada area. The Sikh community built a Gurudwara there. With time Jiaganj became not just a place to live, but a home. Arijit Singh was known as Shonu in his childhood at home and locality. Even after getting big recognition in the year 2013, his relationship remained connected with this city. Music was a part of his life since childhood. Arijit used to go to Gurudwara with his mother. His father told that on special occasions he used to go to Gurudwara with his mother and sing kirtan. Surinder Singh also expressed his feelings on the success of his son. He said, “It’s fun. I love it. People ask me what is your son doing and what is his next project.” Despite working in Mumbai, Arijit’s mind remained connected to Jiaganj. His father said, “It is a very peaceful place. My son could not live in Mumbai and came back. There is such a vibe in this soil.” Even today he is associated with Jiaganj. His children are studying here. He is also running many charity projects for schools and other facilities in the city. On January 27, Arijit Singh announced his retirement from playback singing. His fans were surprised by this news. Discussion on this decision started in the music industry also. Meanwhile, his new song ‘Raina’ has been released.
