‘Always respected tradition’, will credit Jr Dagar Bandhu: AR Rahman | India News
New Delhi: Music Composer AR Rahman Before the Supreme Court on Friday, Ustad N Fayazuddin Dagar and Junior Dagar agreed to give credit to popular Ustad N Zahiruddin Dagar in his song ‘Vera Raja Veera’ as friends.Appearing for Rahman, senior advocate AM Singhvi told a three-judge bench headed by CJI Surya Kant that the composer always respected tradition and took the stance behind the court’s advice in the last hearing. Singhvi said that Rahman will insert a new credit line for every time the song is played on OTT or online channels.
The line reads: “Composition inspired by the Dagarbani tradition Dhrupad, first recorded as a hymn to Shiva by late Ustad N Faiyazuddin Dagar and late Ustad N Zahiruddin Dagar”. Singhvi said it will take four weeks for the insert to be effective across all mediums. The bench gave five weeks time for it.Delhi High Court Justice Pratibha Singh asked to replace the credit line ‘composition based on Dagarbani tradition Dhrupad’ with ‘composition based on Shiva hymns by late Ustad Faiyazuddin Dagar and late Ustad Zahiruddin Dagar’. On an appeal filed by Rahman, a division bench of the High Court set aside the interim order. This was challenged in Ustad Fayyaz Wasifuddin Dagar SC.A week ago, the bench had advised Rahman to recognize the contribution of the legendary Junior Dagar Bandhu to the classical tradition of classical music.Ustad Fayyaz Wasifuddin filed a suit to prevent Dagar Rahman from using ‘Shiva Stuti’ and said he still held the copyright on his father and his uncle’s composition.Disposing of the appeal, the bench said that all disputes of the parties would be kept open during the trial of the case pending before the single-judge bench of the High Court and clarified that it expressed no opinion on the merits of any issue raised in the case.
