During the eye camp organized on February 1 at ‘New Rajesh Hitech Hospital’ in Sikriganj, Gorakhpur, cataract operation of 30 patients was done. Just 24 hours after the operation, serious infection started spreading in the eyes of the patients, due to which the condition of 18 people deteriorated. Due to lack of proper treatment, 9 of these patients lost their eyesight forever. Considering the seriousness of the matter, the administration has sealed the eye department of the hospital and the District Magistrate has ordered a magisterial inquiry.
Blood and pus: harrowing tales of victims
According to the victims’ families, blood and pus started falling from the eyes after returning home from the hospital. Indari resident Sanjay Singh told that his father’s eye did not stop bleeding, after which he had to be taken to Varanasi and then to Delhi.
Another woman Rekha told that many people of the village including her mother-in-law had gone to this camp, where after the operation the problem of unbearable pain and pus started. The condition of many patients was so bad that doctors even had to remove their eyes.
Administration took action
The primary investigation and culture report of the health department has confirmed severe infection. gorakhpur CMO Dr. Rajesh Jha said that as soon as information about the incident was received on February 4, a district level committee was formed. The team of Microbiology Department of BRD Medical College inspected the hospital. In view of the danger of infection, not only was this hospital sealed, but instructions have also been given to disinfect the operation theaters of other nearby hospitals.
DM said – punishment will fall on the culprits
Gorakhpur District Magistrate Deepak Meena has taken a tough stance in this matter. He said that the hospital has been closed with immediate effect and a magisterial inquiry has been setup. After the report comes, along with canceling the registration of the culprits, advance legal action will also be taken against them. The Health Department is now recording the statements of the doctors who performed the operation and the hospital management and collecting the medical reports as evidence so that the victims can get justice.
