On Saturday, the last day of Sahitya Aaj Tak in Lucknow, a session ‘Hindi Fiction Writing and Youth’s Choice’ was organized on Stage Two. In this, two young fiction writers Neelotpal Mrinal and Divya Prakash Dubey joined for discussion. Both the writers expressed their views with humor and also gave interesting advice on fiction writing and youth’s choices.
Young writer Neelotpal Mrinal said many things on the preferences of young readers and fiction writing. He said that there is no formula for writing a book. Just have to keep writing. Because one cannot learn to write novels by reading novels. Just like by eating Kadhai Paneer from Hotel Taj, we cannot learn to make it. For this we will have to learn the recipe. Therefore, those who are thinking that this time I have bought many books in the book fair and will read and write about them, it is not so.
If you want to write fiction then read history, read politics, read foreign policy, read world business. If you don’t read non-fiction things then you will wonder from where. Therefore, to write fiction, it is important to read non-fiction, because it serves as fuel for our thinking. Here I will mention only one book and I would like that every youth of India should definitely read Dinkar ji’s ‘Char Adhyay of Culture’. We have to get over the temptation to teach and keep learning. There is no formula for writing
Before this, Neelotpal told many interesting stories about the struggles of youth and young readers. He said that it is said that the youth are not fond of books. Right now Bhojpuri singers are performing nearby, but these youth are listening to the discussion on books here. This proves that the attraction towards books has not diminished among the youth; the youth are also good readers.
We are full-time writers and we know that the number of young readers reading in Hindi is so high that now no Hindi writer will complain of lack of readers. These young Hindi readers give this assurance.
Writing and literature is a mantra to change destiny. This is not a matter to be taken lightly. Today, the work which institutions are not able to do, schools and colleges are not able to do, pictures of great men are not able to do, that work is being done by the writings of their respective times. Because, readers think that this is my story. The writer has brought my story to the fore.
What is the motivation of the youth preparing?
Nilotpal Mrinal said that when I was preparing for UPSC, Vivekananda was hanging in our room. His job was to somehow get these people qualified for prelims. Because, it was written below his picture – Get up, run and don’t stop until you reach your destination. After a month, Vivekananda’s poster was replaced on the wall. Because, we were not awake. Tired of walking, he would move from one wall to the other and his quotations would also change – when will he wake up, when will he wake up, when will he run.
Then I went to a motivational class to get motivated. Father said, son, take thick gram flour, add chopped potatoes to it and make pakodas in mustard oil and eat it, it will be more beneficial. How will anyone else motivate the country which Viveka Nand is not able to motivate?
Nowadays there is a new fashion like depression, separation and depression. We are standing in front of this poison with a book so that we can show that whatever is breaking in our time, these youth have the courage to collect it and make it an idol again, within whom something is breaking. We weave a book from the same broken fiber and are trying to create a new man from the same broken fiber. So the writing of our times is very important.
Youth can get motivation only from youth
If one of our roommates gets selected, he comes back to Mukherjee Nagar after six months. To see how much poverty there is now. Again he leans on the same railing and looks down, on which earlier he used to lean and ask the date of PT and Mains. The friend who is still preparing thinks that since he has come as an officer, now something colorful will happen. The officer friend says that I am bored of eating spicy food, there should be something simple. After this, some junior will come and make a video that so and so brother is still connected to the land even after becoming an IAS, see him eating dal and rice chokha. Then likes and comments will come on this video.
Those friends who have been selected like us who prepare, give two thousand to five thousand rupees and tell us to stay on the top floor and keep preparing. Therefore, I want to say that our motivation is these friends. This story of the youth among us works as a motivation for the youth. Today we are talking about the 70 percent youth of India becoming world leaders. The stories among those youth have to be brought to the fore. That is the mainstream. If we do not bring their stories in books, then what kind of mainstream are we talking about?
Boys from villages, rural areas and small towns are joining civil services, they have seen the real struggle. No matter what happens, whatever remains of the basic consciousness of public service remains in these village boys. Because he has seen his father and uncle pleading in front of the Inspector to lodge an FIR for the land dispute. When these boys become IPS, they will never shout at the old man wearing dhoti or at the people of that class.
That’s why I tell the village children to go for government jobs and public service, only then will public service in the country become people-oriented. Because, in reality, only those who are among the people can understand the problems of the people till the last row. A public servant will have to be brought from among the people.

Whereas Divya Prakash Dubey agreed with the views of Neelotpal Mrinal and said that a month ago we were in Delhi Book Fair. At that time we stayed there for about two and a half days and during this time we did not even get a break of two minutes. Because, someone or the other was always reaching there saying, Sir, please sign this book. When we come tired in the evening, we think that people come to meet us after waiting for 20-20 minutes. Then we tell them that we have waited 13-14 years for you to wait for this 20 minutes.
When you write four-five books, you feel pressured to write your next book like this. Because, the reader also has a sword in his hand. So when I was writing the sixth book ‘Ibnebtooti’ I felt that it was going in the wrong direction. Then I thought that I will remove this pressure from my mind and will write a book only with the understanding that this is my first book and I will be known by this in future. I was writing a book – Aako-Baako. When I was writing a story in this, I felt that to write this one story, I had written the previous 5 books.
