Left IT job and chose acting: Got first job after 60 auditions; Naina Sarin said- If you want to stay in Mumbai then arranging money is necessary.
She left a good job in an IT company and went to FTII and then came to Mumbai and struggled continuously. Got the first advertisement after 60 auditions, but did not give up. Actress Naina Sareen, who has been seen in series like web series Made in Heaven, Tribhuvan Mishra CA Topper, Rakh and Pritam & Pedro, spoke openly about her struggles, auditions, industry, family and future plans in a conversation with Dainik Bhaskar. Question: How much pressure was there from family and society when you dreamed of acting? Answer: I am from a middle class family of Bokaro. Relatives thought it was just a hobby and I would go back to work after a few years. But mom and dad always supported me. Mom used to say, “We will see when it hits my head.” Question: How did you decide to go to FTII before coming to Mumbai? Answer: I did not have money to come directly to Mumbai. Came to know about FTII from a senior in college. At that time, I was an instructional designer in an IT company in Bengaluru. Along with the job, she learned voice over and mimicry. Then after preparation, I gave FTII entrance exam again and got selected. Question: What was the biggest lesson given by FTII? Answer: Not only acting is taught there, but one also learns to understand oneself and express one’s feelings openly. The biggest strength is the community there. Even after coming to Mumbai, batchmates and seniors always remained together. Question: How did you get your first job in Mumbai? Answer: After coming to Mumbai, I gave auditions continuously. Got the first advertisement after about 60 auditions. It was directed by Neeraj Ghaywan. Later he also cast me in Made in Heaven. Question: Which was your first film? Answer: It was during my studies at FTII that I came across the film ‘ Hotel Mumbai ‘. In this I played the role of a receptionist of Taj Hotel. After this ‘Eeb Aale Oo’ gave me a lot of recognition. It was shown in many international film festivals. Question: How did the journey of the web series begin? Answer: After Made in Heaven, Tribhuvan Mishra became CA topper. There was a long shoot in this show and many other projects had to be left. But the atmosphere on the set was great. Manav Kaul and the entire team helped a lot in every scene. Question: There were only two scenes in Rakh, still why did you choose the role? Answer: The character was small, but very impactful. While giving the audition itself, I understood that it is not easy. There were intimacy scenes too, but intimacy coordinators were present on the set, so the entire atmosphere was safe and professional. Question: How was the experience of working with Rajkumar Hirani and Arshad Warsi in Pritam & Pedro? Answer: Arshad sir is very disciplined. I was surprised to hear his daily routine. Rajkumar Hirani sir, after seeing my scene, asked whether I had studied acting. When he came to know that I was from FTII, he talked a lot about the institute. Question: You said that even after playing the lead role, you do not hesitate to do small roles? Answer: Not at all. I myself told casting directors to call me for auditions for all types of roles. I don’t watch screen time. It doesn’t matter whether a good character is small or big. Question: What was the biggest challenge during the struggle? Answer: The biggest challenge in Mumbai is money. I tell every new artist to first decide on a source of income. Do voice over, become an assistant, do writing or do any other job, but it is important to remain financially stable. Question: Which was the most challenging character? Answer: Tribhuvan Mishra played the role of mother in CA Topper. It was not easy to understand the mother’s responsibility, her body language and emotions. For this I observed my mother very closely. Question: Which projects are you working on currently? Answer: Have completed shooting of some independent films. Apart from this, I am writing a mini series based on my personal experiences with my FTII batchmate Shreya Bhattacharya. Currently looking for a producer for it. Question: What are your plans for personal life? Answer: My focus right now is only to work in films. Marriage will happen at the right time and when the right person is found. Right now I want to have so much work that I don’t have time to think about other things. Question: Have you also learned mimicry and voice over? Answer: Yes. Took training in Bangalore. Making a voice is easy, but maintaining it in the same tone for a long time is the most difficult task. Earlier it also used to record children’s e-learning books.
