Doctors at the Trauma Center of King George’s Medical College (KGMU), Lucknow, saved the life of a 23-year-old laborer by performing a very difficult operation. Four iron rods had passed through the young man’s body. After the surgery that lasted for about 8 hours and 30 minutes, the doctors removed all the rods from his body. At present the patient is admitted in ICU and his condition is said to be stable.
Umesh, a resident of Naraiya village of Farrukhabad, on the morning of 13 July. Lucknow Was working in an under construction building in Badshah Nagar. During this time, he lost his balance and fell several feet below on the iron bars. The accident was so serious that four iron rods entered the left side of his body and came out, ripping his stomach and chest. Three of these bars had reached the shoulder and neck.
The people present at the spot did not try to remove the bars. Rather, those bars were cut and in the same condition, Umesh was taken to the Trauma Center of KGMU in an ambulance. Doctors say that if the rods had been removed on the spot, he could have died. On reaching the hospital the patient’s condition was very serious. His blood pressure was falling and there was blood in his urine. Investigation revealed that the bladder, small intestine, stomach, spleen, diaphragm, left lung and several major blood vessels had been badly damaged by the rods. There was difficulty in breathing due to the lungs being filled with air.
Laborer’s life saved due to people’s wisdom
Pro. Under the direction of Dr. Sameer Mishra, Dr. Narendra Kumar and his team somehow managed the first patient. After this he was taken to the operation theatre. The doctors very carefully removed the rods one by one and repaired all the injured body parts. This operation lasted for about 8 hours 30 minutes. During this period, 3 units of packed red blood cells (PRBC) and 4 units of fresh frozen plasma (FFP) were also transfused to the patient.
After surgery the patient was admitted to ICU. According to doctors, now his condition is stable and is being continuously monitored. KGMU Vice Chancellor Prof. Sonia Nityanand praised the entire medical team that conducted the successful operation. He said that in such cases, timely treatment and coordination between different departments can save the patient’s life.
Doctors have appealed to the people that if an iron rod or any sharp object gets stuck in a person’s body, then never remove it on the spot or before taking him to the hospital. This can cause heavy bleeding and the patient’s life can be in danger. Only specialist doctors can remove such things in the operation theatre.
Patient got new life due to hard work of medical team
In this complex surgery, Prof. Dr. Sameer Mishra, Dr. Narendra Kumar, Dr. Yadvendra Dheer, Dr. Rambit, Dr. Charanveer, Dr. Mahesh, Dr. Prajwal, Dr. Dhairya, Dr. Ankit, Dr. Akhand, Dr. Mohtasni, Dr. Sagar and Dr. Parth were included. The anesthesia team was led by Dr. Vipin. His team included Dr. Harish, Dr. Obenthung and Dr. Mrinanjal.
