Comedian Rajiv Thakur recently told that his family lived in a one-room house, where the bedroom, kitchen and bathroom were all in the same room. His father’s factory was destroyed in the 1984 riots, which worsened the family’s financial condition.
Rajiv became emotional while remembering his early days in Vaibhav Munjal’s podcast. He said that he does not like to talk much about that period of his life because the memories of those days still pain him.
He said, ‘My journey started in such circumstances, which I don’t even want to remember. If I tell people about this today, they may think it is a fabrication. Many people say turn your pain into stand-up comedy. I do this sometimes, but even while telling those jokes, the pain is so real that I go backstage and cry.

Rajiv Thakur has appeared in ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ and ‘The Great Indian Kapil Show’.
The whole family lived in one room
Rajiv told that after the marriage of his parents, the circumstances of the family had completely changed. According to him, the father had to leave the ancestral home and the entire family started living in a one-room house.
He further said, ‘That one room is your bathroom. That room is the kitchen. That is the drawing room. That’s the bedroom. There are three brothers and sisters in that house. If you think, the bathroom is the same, the bedroom is also the same, the kitchen is also the same, so when someone was taking bath inside or doing anything, the other four people were sitting outside the house. I used to think of my house as a public toilet. I was not getting just Rs 2 for sitting outside.
Father’s factory was destroyed in the riots
Rajiv also told that his father had a thread factory in Amritsar, which was destroyed during the 1984 riots. After this the father became unemployed and the financial condition of the family worsened. He said that sometimes it became difficult to pay the rent.
Referring to the circumstances of his childhood, Rajiv said that there was only one 40 watt bulb in the house. He said that he had a desire to see white light because there was no tube light in his house. He also said that the landlord used to switch off the electricity at 9 pm, after which the family would either sleep or spend time by the light of kerosene lamps.

Rajiv Thakur also worked in the popular web series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack.
Rajiv Thakur started his comedy journey with Kapil Sharma and Chandan Prabhakar in Amritsar before coming to Mumbai.
