The central government has taken a big decision regarding the prices of medicines. National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority i.e. NPPA has fixed the maximum retail price of 39 new medicines. This order has been issued under the Drugs Price Control Order 2013.
This includes medicines used in diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, infection, eye disease, shortness of breath and cancer.
This notification was released on 8th July. The prices of medicines fixed in this list include tenecteplase injection, oral solution of Vitamin D3, imatinib oral solution, combination medicines related to empagliflozin, telmisartan combination, capsules containing aspirin and atorvastatin and clopidogrel combination medicines.
According to this order of NPPA, now no pharmaceutical company will be able to sell these medicines at a price higher than the fixed maximum price. All companies will have to provide new price information to their dealers and state drug regulators and send updated price lists. That means it will be necessary to send this information to shops and hospitals also so that patients can get medicines at the right price.

It has also been made clear in the order that companies can add GST to the price of the medicine only when that GST has actually been paid to the government or is scheduled to be paid. There is no leeway to increase prices arbitrarily by adding GST.
NPPA has given a clear warning that if any company charges more than the fixed price, then it will have to return the extra amount along with interest. This action will be taken under the Drugs Price Control Order and Essential Commodities Act. The aim of the government is that essential medicines should be available to the common people at reasonable prices and no company should be able to charge arbitrary prices from the patients.
