Khamenei was buried in the mausoleum built in the shrine complex of Imam Reza. This religious place, built in the ninth century, is considered the most sacred pilgrimage of Shia Muslims, where lakhs of devotees come every year for darshan. Khamenei was also born in Mashhad and received his initial religious education here.
