Last year in 2025, one year is going to be completed since the devastating disaster that occurred in Dharali area on 5th August, but the horrific pictures of that day are still fresh in the minds of the local people. In the year 2025, the massive debris and flood in Kheerganga changed the geography of the land within a few minutes. Within no time, hotels, houses, shops and other constructions were engulfed in debris, while the national highway leading to Gangotri Dham was also badly destroyed.
During the disaster, relief and rescue operations were conducted for several days by Army, ITBP, NDRF, SDRF, Police, BRO and other agencies. It was feared that a large number of people were missing. In which 07 were declared dead while 53 were considered missing, out of which many were declared dead but one and a half bodies have not been found till date. Many families are still waiting for the last clues of their relatives.
Local people of Dharali say that the disaster not only took away buildings and businesses, but years of hard work, memories and livelihoods were also buried under the debris. Even today, standing at the disaster site, the horror of that day can be easily felt.
If we talk about the current situation, a temporary path has been prepared for traffic by cutting the Gangotri National Highway over the debris, due to which the traffic is smooth. However, the process of permanent treatment of the affected area, security operations and rehabilitation of displaced families has still not been completed. Local people are hopeful that by the first anniversary of the disaster, the work related to safety and rehabilitation will be expedited, so that the damage caused by such situations can be reduced in future.
This tragedy in Dharali also reminds us of the need to be alert to the increasing natural disasters in the Himalayan regions and to take long-term security measures in sensitive areas. Even after a year, the traces of debris and destroyed houses bear silent testimony to that fateful day.
