Jagannath Rath Yatra 2026: Devotees wait throughout the year for the Rath Yatra to be held at Shri Jagannath Temple in Puri (Odisha). It is not just a religious festival, but a wonderful union of faith, tradition and devotion. Every year lakhs of devotees reach Puri to have darshan of Lord Jagannath, his elder brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra. But, just before the Rath Yatra, Lord Jagannath falls ill for 15 days and during this time the devotees are not able to have darshan of him. There is a very emotional and inspirational story behind this.
Ansar period starts after Snan Purnima
Snan Purnima is organized on the day of Jyeshtha Purnima before the Rath Yatra. On this occasion, Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra are given a special bath (Abhishek) with water from 108 sacred pitchers. According to religious beliefs, after such a grand bath, the Lord gets fever and becomes unwell. For this reason God rests for 15 days. This period is called Ansar Kaal or Anavasar Kaal. During this time, the doors of the sanctum sanctorum of the temple remain closed for common devotees and the Lord is given special treatment.
God himself took the disease for devotee Madhav Das
According to the legend, Madhav Das, a great devotee of Lord Jagannath, was suffering from a serious illness for a long time. He prayed to his devotee to get rid of his suffering, in response to which Lord told that due to the deeds of his previous birth, there are still 15 more days of illness left, only after which he will get salvation. Seeing the suffering of his devotee, Lord Jagannath’s heart melted. It is said that he took upon himself the last 15 days of Madhava Das’s illness. As a result, Madhava Das became healthy and the Lord himself became unwell. Since then this tradition has been going on that after Snan Purnima, Lord Jagannath remains ill for 15 days.
God’s treatment is done through medicines
During Ansar Kaal, normal offerings are not made to the Lord. His service is done as per the Vaidya tradition. Special offerings prepared from decoctions, medicines and herbs are offered to the Lord for his quick recovery.
Navayuvan Darshan and Rath Yatra
When the Lord becomes completely healthy, then the devotees are able to see him through Navayuvan Darshan. After this, Lord Jagannath sets out on a grand Rath Yatra with his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra.
message of devotion and compassion
This story of Lord Jagannath being ill is not just a religious belief, but a symbol of the unwavering love between God and the devotee. This story shows that in front of true devotion, God himself is ready to bear the sufferings of his devotees. That is why Jagannath Rath Yatra has become a great union of feelings and faith of crores of devotees.
