A big dispute has come to light over the alleged occupation of school land in Canning area of South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. It is alleged that local Trinamool Congress leaders had forcibly occupied the school land years ago and sold it, where many shops were later built. Despite repeated complaints from the administration and the police, no action was taken, finally the students themselves took charge and demolished the occupied shops with the help of bamboo sticks and vacated the land.
Event canning It is said to be from Raibaghini School. According to local sources, a large part of the school playground was allegedly captured by local Trinamool leaders several years ago. Later this land was sold and shops were built there. It is being told that at that time the school administration had also lodged a complaint with the police, but no concrete action was taken. It is alleged that when teachers and students joined the movement to get back the school land, they were threatened in various ways.
Local people allege that local youth Trinamool leader Jayanta Ghorai was behind this occupation. People say that because of their fear, no one could muster the courage to take back the school land for years. However, after the change in political circumstances, Jayanta fled from the Ghorai area. After this, the students, seeing the opportunity, started a campaign to remove the encroached shops. According to eyewitnesses, a group of students arrived with bamboo and sticks and started demolishing the shops. During this period there was an atmosphere of tension in the area.
However, the school headmaster and other teachers refused to say anything openly on this matter. Local people say that Trinamool leaders were allegedly in possession of government land as well as school property and the administration was working under their influence. For this reason the earlier protests remained ineffective. Local residents say that when the administration and police did not take any action, the students themselves had to come forward to take back their school land.
