The tension between Nihang Sikhs and Uttarakhand Police over Nagarasu and Karnaprayag Gurdwara dispute has now ended. After talks that lasted all night, the Nihangs agreed to return early on Friday morning. With this the situation has started becoming normal in Dehradun.
In fact, on June 25, the Nihangs had already announced that they would leave Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. Uttarakhand Will march towards. The reason for this was an old dispute that took place in Karnaprayag and Nagarasu Gurudwaras, in which the police had arrested four Nihangs.
In protest against this arrest, a group of Nihangs had reached Kulhal check post on the Himachal-Uttarakhand border. Talks were held with the administration at Paonta Sahib, but no agreement was reached to stop the march, after which the Nihangs moved ahead.
The Nihangs had clearly said that their aim is not to create conflict or disturb law and order, rather they want to travel to Hemkund Sahib peacefully and want bail for their arrested comrades.
After this, about 50 Nihangs left for Dehradun on bike, while about 150 Nihangs returned back to Paonta Sahib. Some Nihangs went to different places in small groups. Even before the Nihangs reached Premnagar area on the Dehradun border, the police had converted the entire area into a cantonment.
Meanwhile, the Nihangs dodged the police and moved towards Rishikesh, due to which there was a stir there too. At around 12 o’clock in the night, barricading was done on many roads including Dehradun-Rishikesh Highway at Jogiwala check post, due to which there was a long jam in the city. As soon as Nihang Jogiwala reached the check post, the police turned them away from there, after which the group dispersed in the city.
Later, some Nihangs were accommodated in the Gurudwara located at Race Course in Dehradun, where heavy police force was deployed outside. Here, talks continued throughout the night between the district administration, police officers and representatives of the Sikh community. Finally at 3:30 in the morning the Nihangs agreed to return back to Paonta Sahib.
Congress leader and Sikh community representative Amarjeet Singh, who participated in the talks, said that the aim of the Nihangs was never to spread hysteria, but to find a peaceful solution. He said that this was never a fight between the mountains and the Sikh community, rather there was rhetoric from both sides.
He praised the role of the administration, but also said that there were some mistakes by the government in the beginning, which increased the controversy. DM Ashish Chauhan and SSP Pramendra Dobal also said that the entire matter was handled peacefully and law and order remained under control.
