According to Mahabharata, Bhimsen was very fond of food and could not observe regular fasts. When all the Pandavas used to fast on Ekadashi, it was difficult for Bhimsen. Then he was advised to observe Nirjala Ekadashi fast only once in a year. Bhimsen observed this fast with full devotion and received the virtue of all the 24 Ekadashis.
