Two senior US officials have reached Sri Lanka on separate tours in Colombo. These include Pacific Air Forces Commander General Kevin Schneider. Officials said on Monday that these visits focus on defence, security and economic cooperation. These visits are being considered important amid Washington’s increasing activism in the strategically important Indian Ocean region.
According to the US Embassy, Schneider is on a three-day visit on Sunday. Sri Lanka Arrived and his tour will end on June 24. Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs S Paul Kapoor also arrived in Colombo on Sunday on a three-day visit. These high profile visits come at a time when geopolitical competition is increasing in the Indian Ocean region and China has expanded its infrastructure investment and maritime presence in recent years.
What is America The real purpose of?
As part of its comprehensive Indo-Pacific strategy, America is trying to deepen defense, security and economic engagement with the countries of the region including Sri Lanka. According to the US mission, Schneider will meet senior officials of the Sri Lankan government and defense establishment during his visit. These also include leaders of the Defense Ministry and Sri Lanka Air Force. The embassy said that the focus of the talks will be on increasing cooperation in air and maritime surveillance, cyber security, disaster response and regional security.
Schneider oversees all US Air Force personnel and resources in the Indo-Pacific region. The embassy described the visit as a sign of the growing strength of the US-Sri Lanka defense partnership. He also called it an important new milestone in the expanding bilateral relationship built on joint exercises, military exchanges and frequent dialogue at the senior level. The embassy said, the United States considers Sri Lanka an essential partner in the collective effort to maintain peace, security and prosperity.
At the same time, Kapoor will discuss security cooperation and regional issues with senior leaders of Sri Lanka during his visit. He will also meet private sector officials and representatives of American companies to discuss expanding bilateral trade and investment ties. The embassy said the visit reflects President Donald Trump’s commitment to strengthening the partnerships that advance America’s prosperity and security, as well as Indian Ocean India wants to deepen cooperation with Sri Lanka as an important partner.
