The water of Bhakra Canal in Rupnagar district of Punjab has healed a 26 year old deep wound. A Maruti Omni van that went missing while returning from a wedding in October 2000 has been fished out with the help of local divers. Buried in 32 feet deep water, this vehicle has also come out carrying with it the last traces of the family, which suddenly disappeared two decades ago.

Actually, recently diver Kamalpreet Saini had entered the canal near Nakkiyan village in search of another dead body. During this time, his eyes fell on an iron structure buried under water.

Due to being in water for a long time, the roof and rear part of the van had completely melted. Only some part of the front was left safe.

On searching the front part of the van, Saini found some human skeletons and a small shirt of a child. It is believed that it belongs to the 8 year old child who was the victim of this accident.

That fateful night of October 2000
The incident is related to a family of Kotla village. In the year 2000, three men and an 8-year-old child were returning from a wedding when their van went out of control and fell into the Bhakra Canal.

At that time, professional divers had searched the canal for months, but the flow of water was so strong that neither the vehicle nor the body was found.

Now when diver Saini contacted the victim’s family of Kotla village, they requested with tearful eyes to take out the vehicle. The debris was pulled out after much effort with the help of tractors and local people.

Last farewell: peace given with prayer meeting
When the remains and ashes of their loved ones were found after decades of waiting, a wave of mourning ran in the village.

Diver Kamalpreet Saini said, “The current at the bottom of the canal was very strong, it was an impossible task to take out the van, but we took this risk for the sentiments of the family.”

A special prayer meeting was organized at Kiratpur Sahib on Tuesday for the peace of the souls of the deceased. After 26 years, the family got the satisfaction that now the last rites and immersion of ashes of their loved ones can be done as per religious rituals.
