He has challenged the notification of the state government, under which there is a ban on slaughtering of bulls, oxen, cows, calves and buffaloes without a ‘fit certificate’ issued by the authorities after assessing their age and physical condition.

Appearing before the court, Moitra argued that this notification will cause huge financial loss to the economically weaker sections whose livelihood depends on animal husbandry.

Poor people rear cattle with the hope that they will get some economic savings by selling them, but the steps taken by the administration will only harm the common people.”
