The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the food and agriculture organization of the United Nations, has honored Prime Minister Narendra Modi with its highest honor ‘Agricola Medal’ for the year 2026. This honor was presented to Prime Minister Modi by FAO Director General Qu Dongyu in a ceremony organized in the historic Plenary Hall of the FAO Headquarters in Rome.
Congratulating Prime Minister Modi, FAO Director General Qu Dongyu said that this honor has been given in recognition of his commitment towards the welfare of the people, landmark schemes to increase agricultural productivity, efforts made to strengthen food security and improve the living standards of farmers.
He said that Prime Minister Modi has played an important role in fighting hunger and poverty, ensuring global food security and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. Apart from this, his efforts to give priority to agriculture on the global agenda during India’s G20 presidency were also appreciated.
The FAO chief praised Prime Minister Modi’s leadership and foresight in India’s agriculture sector. He said that farmer-centric, innovation-based and transformative policies have given a new direction to India’s agricultural system.
Qu Dongyu said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, India has implemented large-scale schemes in the food and agriculture sector, which have had a wide-ranging impact. He specifically mentioned India’s financial inclusion schemes, the world’s largest food security network reaching 80 crore people after the Covid pandemic and schemes providing direct income support to more than 11 crore farmers.
He also appreciated India’s efforts to promote natural and regenerative farming. Besides, India’s role in popularizing nutrient-rich coarse grains i.e. millets globally was also mentioned as important. FAO described the partnership between India and FAO in organizing the International Millet Year as a remarkable achievement.
The FAO Director General said that India took a historic initiative during its G20 Presidency towards establishing digital public infrastructure as a ‘Global Public Good’. This will facilitate access to digital technologies in developing countries and help empower communities with better delivery of services. He said that due to these continuous efforts, India has been successful in bringing crores of people out of poverty.
