Lucknow University has suspended Dr. Paramjit Singh, Assistant Professor of Zoology Department, amid serious allegations made by the student and violation of University Grant Commission rules. This decision was taken in the emergency meeting of the Executive Council of the University. The matter started gaining momentum after the audio of an alleged conversation between a professor and a third year B.Sc. student went viral.
After the audio went viral, massive protests by students started in the university campus. Students associated with Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) demonstrated on the campus demanding action against the accused teacher. Seeing the situation worsening, the university administration had to call the police. Considering the seriousness of the matter, an FIR was lodged in Hasanganj police station on the complaint of the examination controller of the university under paper leak and other related sections.

According to sources, things like allegedly sharing confidential information related to the examination and putting undue pressure on the student were revealed in the viral audio. After the matter became public, the police detained the accused teacher from the campus. After interrogation, he was sent to jail the next day.
The university administration handed over the responsibility to the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) to investigate this entire episode. The ICC investigated the student’s allegations and submitted its report to the working committee. After this the university constituted a three-member high-level disciplinary inquiry committee. In its interim report, the committee has prima facie found the accused teacher guilty of four serious charges.
According to the investigation committee, the accused teacher is accused of attempting to sexually exploit the student by luring her with a paper leak, violating teacher conduct rules and mental harassment. The report also said that the accused admitted to sharing confidential examination related information before the ICC.
What did the university administration say in the matter?
The university administration says that the conduct of the accused teacher has caused serious damage to the credibility, social prestige and academic integrity of the university. The report also mentions violations of the University Grants Commission’s 2015 regulations. The administration has made it clear that an impartial investigation will be conducted in the matter and if found guilty, strict action will be taken as per rules.
At present, the university has issued a formal charge sheet to the accused teacher and directed him to give a written explanation within 15 days. At the same time, student organizations have raised the demand for dismissal of the accused teacher and ensuring fairness of the examination system. There is still an atmosphere of discussion and resentment in the university campus regarding the matter.
