Wanted to become an actor since childhood

In an interview given to India Today, Yash had shared things related to his career and personal life. Yash says- I was born in village Bhuvanahalli in Hassan district of Karnataka. My father lived in Mysore, so my childhood was also spent there. My father was a BMTC bus driver and mother was a housewife.

We were living a happy life like a normal middle class family. Then I dreamed of becoming an actor. Since childhood, I loved the extra attention I got as an actor. For this reason, I liked to participate in acting, mono acting, fancy dress and dance. I used to get a lot of pleasure from all this. This journey started from there.

There was no other option other than acting

I had no other option other than acting. There was no Plan-B in my life. I just wanted to become an actor. To be honest, I wanted to become a star. At that age I did not understand how difficult it was to become an actor or how much hard work and dedication it required. But since childhood I felt that I would definitely become an actor one day.

Teachers used to call me hero

My school teachers used to call me a hero. In my childhood, I did a mono act in which I used to talk about catching Veerappan. Because of this everyone used to tease me in school. Whenever there was any news about Veerappan, people would jokingly say, “Hey, haven’t you caught him yet?” But I had accepted from within that one day I would become an actor.

Before coming into films, I wanted to study in an acting institute or film school, but my parents were scared. He felt that the film industry is not an easy place and it is difficult to succeed there. It was only after 10th that I wanted to go into acting, because I knew what to do. But family members said that first he has to complete his degree.

I didn’t feel like studying

I completed PUC (Pre-University Course), but gradually realized that I was not interested in studies. Studies didn’t seem bad, but I wanted to become an actor soon. I felt that this was the right age when I should understand and learn my skills. It is important to invest time in any profession, so that it can be learned well. So I decided that now I have to go towards acting.

There was no money to pay the acting institute fees

My parents were very upset. They felt that I was not listening to them. I told him I just wanted one chance. I will join some acting institute or theater group. But at that time we did not have enough money to pay the fees of the Acting Institute. So I decided to join theatre.

I left the house. This was against the wishes of the family. He told me, “Okay, go. But if you come back, then just study and do a job.” I said, “Okay, but give me a chance.” They thought I would be back soon, but that never happened.

Reached Bengaluru with ₹300

When I reached Bengaluru, I had only ₹300. The city seemed very big and intimidating to me. A big city can be intimidating for a person coming from a small town. I felt that people here are very fast and everyone is busy with their lives. But the good thing was that I found helpers everywhere.

Became an emergency actor in theater

I joined ‘Benaka’ theater group and started working backstage. While working backstage, I used to practice the roles of other actors. If an actor was late, I would speak his dialogues. Kept rehearsing like this. Gradually I became an emergency actor. If someone fell ill or the artiste did not come, I was sent to the stage. From there my real journey started and later I started getting bigger roles.

I used to get ₹50 for backstage work in the theater

At that time my parents were worried because it was not easy to live in a city like Bangalore. There was no place to live. I didn’t even know the streets of the city. I had never been to my capital before. I used to get ₹50 for backstage work in the theatre. That was my income and my expenses were covered by it. But today when I look back, it seems not a struggle but a thrill. Every day was a new experience.

Desire to learn acting paved the way

My first stage performance took place in Mumbai. There was a Mysore Association in Matunga, where the theater group went. There was no artist available for the small role, so I said I would do it. I was a backstage worker.

Director Nagbharan sir stopped me before going on stage and said, “Wait, watch and learn first, act later.” But I told him, “Sir, you asked if anyone was there? That’s why I have come. I will do it.” Finally he gave me a chance. That was the first big opportunity of my life and people liked my work.

I went to Mumbai because there were facilities to stay and eat with the theater group. I had only ₹300 and had to survive in Bengaluru with that. That’s why I thought that if I go with the theater team, I will be able to travel by train, eat and drink and will also learn acting.

After this I got work in TV. Someone saw my play and offered me a TV serial. Initially I did not want to do TV, because I only had dreams of films in my mind. I thought that I would not get that stardom in TV. But life teaches a lot.

TV taught me a lot. Working in front of the camera, understanding technical things, understanding focus and shots – I learned all this there. TV is a good place for new artists because there is time to learn and practice. The atmosphere there is like a family and people also teach.

Yash started his acting career with television serials. In the year 2004, he debuted with the TV serial Uttarayan. After this he appeared in serials like Nanda Gokula, Male Billu and Preeti Illada Mele.

Initially ₹ 500 per day was available in TV

Yash says- I got a chance to work in good TV shows and with great actors. From there my real training in acting started. Initially I used to get ₹500 per day in TV. Later, ₹1500 per day was offered for the second serial.

Used to spend TV earnings on clothes and looks

At that time, TV artistes in Karnataka had to buy their own clothes. Rest of the people used to wear the same clothes in many serials and buy a car or property to save money. But I used to spend my earnings on clothes and looks. People used to laugh at me and say that I was wasting money. But I used to tell him, “My dream is to become a superstar.

Right now I don’t have that much money, but I will invest as much in myself as I can. Maybe that’s why someone saw me and said that I can become a hero and I got the offer for the film.

Entry and first break in films

Yash entered films in the year 2007 with the film Jambada Hudugi. In this he played a supporting role. After this, he got his big break with the 2008 film Moggina Manasu. His acting in this film was highly praised and he received the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor (Kannada).

Yash’s first lead film Rocky (2008) was not successful at the box office. After this, films like Kallara Santhe and Gokula also did not do well. However, there was discussion about his acting in these films. The 2010 film Modalsala became Yash’s first solo hit. After this, films like Kirataka, Lucky, Jaanu and Drama established him as a strong actor in Kannada cinema.

Steps towards stardom

Between 2013 and 2017, Yash worked in hit films like Googly, Raja Huli, Gajakesari, Mr. and Mrs. Ramachari, Masterpiece and Santu Straight Forward. During this period his image became that of a mass hero. In particular, Mr. and Mrs. Ramachari proved to be a big hit. Released in 2014, this film did a business of more than ₹50 crore at the box office.

My collection was increasing with every film

Yash says- These films gave me strength and confidence. My collection was increasing with every film and the love of the audience was also increasing. Then I realized that people were expecting something big from me. That’s when I started thinking that cinema is not limited to just doing films and earning money. There is a lot of potential in our industry and we must take it to the next level.

During this time, I watched Prashant Neel’s film ‘Ugram’ and was surprised to see its visuals. On the other hand, I had a good understanding with Homble Productions. We had worked together before and wanted to do something bigger. Then one day Kartik Gowda approached Prashant Neel.

Prashant came to me with the script. I was already a fan of his work. He narrated me a small part of KGF, which was the story of mines. I told him – this part alone is a big story in itself. It can be made in different ways.

At that time my film ‘Mr. and Mrs. Ramachari’ had proved to be a blockbuster. It was one of the biggest hits of that era. This gave us more confidence that now a big budget film can be made.

Then KGF started. When I saw the work that Prashant Neel was doing and how big his vision was, I was convinced that we were building something that could change the industry.

KGF and pan-India identity

The film KGF: Chapter 1, released in the year 2018, gave Yash recognition across the country. His Rocky character in the film was greatly liked by the audience. Directed by Prashanth Neel, this film opened new doors for Kannada cinema. The film was released in many languages ​​and grossed tremendously.

The film grossed approximately ₹250 crore worldwide. At the same time, around ₹ 25 crore was collected worldwide on the first day, which was a record for Kannada cinema at that time. After this, KGF:: Chapter 2, which came in the year 2022, also proved to be a superhit and made many records. It became the highest-grossing film of Kannada cinema. It did a worldwide business of ₹1,215-1,250 crore.

It is one of the few films to have a gross collection of ₹1,000 crore in India. The Hindi version alone had a net earning of over ₹434 crore. It became the first Kannada film to enter the ₹1,000 crore club. After the success of this series, Yash became a pan-India star.

Yash’s two big films in 2026

The year 2026 is going to be special for Yash. His two big films will be released. The first film is ‘Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-ups’, directed by Geetu Mohandas. It is a period gangster drama and will release in theaters on March 19, 2026.

After this, Yash will be seen in the role of Ravana in ‘Ramayana: Part 1’, which will be released on Diwali. In this film, Ranbir Kapoor will be seen in the role of Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi Sita, Ravi Dubey Laxman, Lara Dutta Kaikeyi and Sunny Deol Hanuman.
