Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday moved the confidence motion in the Punjab Assembly, which was later passed unanimously during the special session. Although the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has 94 seats in the 117-seat House and is in a very strong position, it still decided to move the trust motion.

The opposition had never demanded this, but in view of the rumors and claims of some MLAs switching sides, the AAP government decided to present a trust motion in the Assembly today i.e. on May 1. Punjab While presenting the confidence motion, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said, “No doubt, there are rumors and claims going on that AAP is not united or some MLAs may switch sides. So to refute all these things, we have decided to bring this confidence motion.”

After this, many cabinet ministers and MLAs spoke and they unitedly targeted the opposition for making false claims. However, when the trust motion came, SAD, Congress and BJP leaders were not present in the House and after some time the trust motion was passed unanimously. Out of 94 AAP MLAs, 88 were present in the House.

‘Thank you for believing in me’

Punjab Chief Minister after the confidence motion was passed unanimously Bhagwant Maan Said, “There were some rumors going around about AAP MLAs. Claims were being made that 65 MLAs are in touch with others. Today this confidence motion was moved and it was passed unanimously. I thank all the MLAs and ministers for reposing confidence in me.”

He further said that people will continue to have the same faith in 2027 also. Congress itself was spreading all the rumors and today when the confidence motion came, he was not present in the House. Why did AAP bring confidence motion?

When the party was facing a lot of difficulties after 7 Rajya Sabha members left AAP and joined BJP, all eyes were on the AAP unit in Punjab. MP Raghav Chadha had also claimed that he is in touch with some AAP MLAs and it was also felt that now the biggest challenge for AAP is to keep its MLAs united. Therefore, to show its strength and unity, AAP moved this confidence motion.

Opposition leader Pratap Singh Bajwa said, “This is all just a drama. They wanted to do all this under the guise of a special session called for Labor Day. They have brought this confidence motion because they feel that people no longer have faith in them.”

Punjab BJP MLA and working president Ashwini Sharma also said, “They are already in a strong position, so what was the need for this confidence motion?”

What do experts say?

Kuldeep Singh, retired professor of the Department of Political Science at Guru Nanak University, in a conversation with Aaj Tak, says, “The purpose of the strategy of convening the House is to reduce the impact of the departure of 7 out of 10 Rajya Sabha MPs. On the surface, they have named it ‘Labor Day’ (working day). Passing any kind of proposal is considered a symbol of confidence in the government. This proves that they have the necessary numerical strength. Or, the passing of any bill. It is considered a sign of majority.”

Professor Kuldeep further says, “The purpose of this is to neutralize or eliminate the impact of the departure of Rajya Sabha MPs. If any new political development comes to light, the government can be demanded to call a session of the House. Therefore, today you may be in majority, but tomorrow the situation may change. Usually a time limit of six months is fixed for this, but suppose there is a rift in the party and if the legislature party goes to the Governor, then the situation may change. Is.”

He further says that this is a temporary relief. Whether the government will be able to complete this entire tenure or not will entirely depend on the circumstances of the time. The six-month convention is a different matter, but one should be aware of the constitutional obligations of the Governor. If the government loses its majority, it simply means that it no longer has the right to remain in power. Considering the current situation of the House, the Governor has the right to ask the Chief Minister to prove his majority in the House.”
