DS Degree College administration, Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, has hired a 12-year-old langur ‘Golu’ to save students from monkey attack about 6 months ago. This langur patrols the campus from 8 am to 5 pm and drives away a group of 600-700 monkeys. In exchange for this security service, Golu’s owner Luv is given a salary of Rs 12,000 every month. With this decision of Principal Dr. Mukesh Bhardwaj, the study environment has improved and students are now able to roam around the campus without fear. Luv, a resident of Sambhal, has been raising Golu for the last several years and feeds him home-made food and fruits.
Fear of 600 monkeys and Golu’s duty
According to Principal Dr. Mukesh Bhardwaj, there was so much terror of monkeys in the college that they used to tear even the clothes and books of the students. Many times there were attacks on staff and students. Golu was brought in to root out this problem. As soon as Golu’s duty started, the monkeys stopped entering the campus. Golu not only college, but Aligarh Monkey extermination works in other areas of the smart city also.
‘Guard’ worth Rs 12,000 becomes friend of students
Golu has now become not just a protector but the identity of the college. Students Yada Gautam and Madhuri say that earlier it was difficult to bring food, but now they are breathing a sigh of relief. According to student Atul Sharma, because of Golu the tension on the campus has changed into security and smiles. Students are often seen taking selfies with Golu. He does not harm anyone and is of very calm nature.
Langur’s diet and owner’s experience
According to Golu’s owner Luv, he has been raising him since childhood. Special care is taken of Golu’s diet, which includes brinjal, papaya, potato, tomato and roti. Luv has brought her with him from Sambhal to Aligarh. Apart from college, he has also served in various government projects. Both the administration and the students are extremely satisfied with Golu’s work as he has made the college safe again.
