Describing the situation during the American attack, Momeneh said that there were 104 crew members on the ship. Everyone was safe after the first torpedo attack by the American submarine. He said this during an interview with government news agency Tasnim, the clip of which was shared by the Iranian Embassy in India on Twitter on Sunday.
He said that this attack was carried out by a submarine without any warning. When the first torpedo attack occurred, everyone was at their respective places and fortunately there were no casualties. There were 104 people on the ship and no one left the ship. Everyone stood firm till the end. He told that this ship was sent to participate in naval exercises at Visakhapatnam port of India.
IRIS Dena reached Visakhapatnam on 16 February to participate in the International Fleet Review (IFR) and multilateral exercise MILAN-2026. He was warmly welcomed by India’s Eastern Naval Command. About 74 countries participated in this exercise. The US Navy guided-missile destroyer USS Pinckney was also scheduled to participate, but canceled its participation at the last minute. This exercise ended on 25 February. After this the ship left and was attacked on 4 March.
Momeneh alleged that the US attack was against international maritime laws and that they were given no prior warning. He said that this attack happened suddenly between 3 and 3:30 in the afternoon. This was completely against international maritime laws. This was not a war zone and we had no warning.
US President Donald Trump said in a sarcastic tone that he was a little worried by the sinking of IRIS Dena. He said the US wanted to capture the ship, but officials told them it was more fun to sink it.
Momeneh said that America’s main goal was to kill the crew. If their aim was only to damage the ship, they could have targeted other parts, but their aim was to kill the crew but we stood firm till the end. For us, leaving the ship was like the soil of Iran, there was no point in leaving it.
