Another soldier has lost his life in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. Sergeant Moshe Yitzhak Hacohen Katz, 22, was killed during a military operation in southern Lebanon on Saturday. Katz had come to Israel from Connecticut, USA, last year and joined the army and had completed his military training just a few weeks ago.
Moshe Katz was originally from New Haven, Connecticut. He was the eldest among his five siblings. According to the Israeli Army, Moshe Katz was posted in the 890th Battalion of the Paratroopers Brigade.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement on Sunday paying tribute to Moshe Katz. He said Katz ‘fought bravely in defense of the motherland.’
Moshe’s sister Adina Katz told in an interview with ‘Ynet News’ that her brother had decided to join the army after Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. About 1,200 people were killed in this attack.

Had completed training just a few weeks ago
Moshe arrived in Israel last year without knowing the Hebrew language. He completed a language learning course before joining the army. He had completed his training just a few weeks ago, in the convocation of which his entire family participated. His sister told that he completed his ‘Beret March’ smiling.
After Katz’s death, his father Mendy Katz wrote an emotional post on Facebook. He wrote, ‘My heart is broken and this pain is deep.’
Rabbi Joshua Hecht, a relative of Moshe in Connecticut, said that Moshe’s faith and his love for the Israeli people had inspired him. He said that Moshe wanted to join the ‘Israel Defense Forces’ (IDF) to protect the lives of the people he loved.
Netanyahu pays tribute to Moshe Katz
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu wrote on Twitter, ‘My wife and I express our heartfelt condolences to the family of Sergeant Moshe Yitzhak Hacohen Katz, who was martyred in the war in Lebanon. Moshe came to Lebanon from the United States, joined the Paratroopers Brigade and fought bravely to defend our homeland.
Netanyahu further said, ‘On behalf of all Israeli citizens, we are with Moshe’s family at this difficult time and wish a speedy and complete recovery for our soldiers injured in this incident. May his memory remain a blessing for us.
