End of 13 years long silence
Harish had gone into coma after falling from the fourth floor of the hostel in 2013 and was continuously on life support system since then. It is said that Harish Rana, who was doing B.Tech from Punjab University, had fallen from the fourth floor. He suffered a serious head injury and after this his life remained limited between the hospital and machines. Time passed, but consciousness never came back. This wait gradually turned into an endless pain for the family.
Supreme Court decision
On March 11, 2026, in an important decision of the Supreme Court, Harish Rana was given permission for passive euthanasia. The family underwent every possible treatment for years and kept their hopes high, but when no improvement was seen, they chose this difficult path. The court also heard the matter with full sensitivity and allowed the procedure as per medical protocol. On March 14, Harish Rana was admitted to AIIMS, Delhi. Here a team of expert doctors stayed with him in the palliative care unit. Doctors gradually started the process of removing the life support system as per the instructions of the Supreme Court. This was not a sudden step, but was done in a phased manner under complete medical supervision. During this, it was ensured that Harish did not suffer any kind of pain or discomfort. He was continuously given painkillers, so that he could get peace in his last moments.
Team of doctors and sensitive procedure
A special medical team was formed for this entire process, which was led by Dr. Seema Mishra. The team included experts in neurosurgery, palliative medicine, onco-anesthesia and psychiatry. Former onco-anesthesia chief Dr. Sushma Bhatnagar had told that during passive euthanasia, the nutrition given to the patient is gradually reduced and it is kept in mind that he does not suffer any kind of pain. This was not just a medical procedure, but an attempt to end life with dignity.
