Veteran Bollywood actress Shabana Azmi has praised director Zoya Akhtar, saying that she portrayed Katrina Kaif in a very respectful and sensitive manner in the film ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’, especially in the scene when Katrina’s character was shown coming out of water and wearing a bikini. Shabana clarified that the way Zoya used the camera did not objectify Katrina’s body, but presented her as a working and independent woman.

According to the news of Indian Express, Shabana said that the issue of objectification of women in films has always troubled her. He says that the style of the camera decides what the director is interested in. If the camera focuses directly on the body parts then it is objectification, but Zoya used the camera in long shot and did not zoom in from the left leg to the face in a straight line, thereby not aiming at just making a woman look attractive.

Shabana also said that in Bollywood, there are item numbers and many such scenes where women are used only for attraction, which at times have no essential role in the story of the film. She says that such scenes send wrong messages to the society and it also affects small children when they sing these songs in plays or programs and people around them consider it a joke and encourage them.

This film by Zoya Akhtar was released in 2011 and Katrina Kaif’s role in it is that of a diving instructor. Shabana praised Zoya’s sensitivity and approach to film making, which did not treat women as mere showpieces. Giving an example, she said that Zoya placed the camera in that bikini scene only as per the emotional need and story, which makes Katrina’s character look strong and self-confident and not just the subject of a gender gaze.
