Amidst the increasing tension between America and Iran, the Indian Embassy in Tehran has issued an advisory to its people to leave Iran immediately. According to the records of the Ministry of External Affairs, iran A total of 10765 NRIs live in India. Of these, 10320 are NRIs and 445 are of Indian origin. Many of these are students and many people work there in the fields related to education, engineering and business. Most of the Indians live in the major cities of Iran, Tehran, Isfan and Zahedan.
Currently Iranian airspace is open and commercial flights are operating. Therefore, the government does not consider the people living there as trapped. However, the Indian Embassy in Tehran has issued an advisory to the Indian community living there to leave Iran immediately and is in constant touch with the people living there to help them. People have been asked to keep their passports and travel related documents ready. Also, Indian citizens who have not contacted the Embassy have been advised to register through the official link of the Embassy.
Last year, there was a situation of tension between Iran and Israel. Then, under Operation Sindhu (June 2025), the Indians living there were brought back safely. Right now tension is increasing, but Iran’s air space is still open and commercial flights are coming to India. Therefore, Indian citizens wishing to return to India have been advised to use regular commercial air services.

There have been no reports of any Indian citizens missing or killed during the recent protests. The government had earlier also issued travel advisories on 5 and 14 January 2026. In this, it was urged to avoid non-essential travel to Iran. Indians present in Iran have been advised to leave through commercial flights and remain alert.
Medical Students Association wrote letter to PM
Here, in view of the advisory issued by the Indian Embassy in Tehran, All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) has also written a letter to the PM and expressed concern about the return and career of the students studying there. In the letter, AIMSA has requested the government to make arrangements for the safe evacuation and return of the stranded Indian students as soon as possible.
The association has also requested the government to immediately coordinate with Iranian universities and authorities to postpone the exams scheduled for Indian students studying there, in view of the security situation and the advisory to Indian citizens to leave the country.
It is not right for students to stay in Iran just to take exams.
The association said that it is neither safe nor possible for students to stay in Iran just to appear for exams. It is written in the letter that we are sure that your kind and important intervention will safeguard the lives and future of thousands of Indian students studying abroad. It said that the Embassy in Tehran issued an advisory on Monday, in which all Indian citizens, including students, were asked to leave Iran immediately.
It was said in the letter that in the current tense geopolitical environment, it is neither safe nor possible for students to stay in Iran just to give exams. Their safety and well-being should be considered the biggest national priority. Apart from this, confusion regarding the exam is causing psychological stress and hindrance in studies among the students and their families.
