Ranveer Singh reaches Karnataka High Court: Demands cancellation of private complaint and FIR registered regarding ‘Kantara controversy’

Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh approached the Karnataka High Court to cancel the private complaint and FIR filed against him in Bengaluru. This matter is related to the comment related to the film Kantara: Chapter 1. This petition was filed in the Karnataka High Court. In this, the complaint pending in the city Magistrate Court was challenged and questions were raised on the FIR registered at High Grounds Police Station in Bengaluru. In this case, police and complainant advocate Prashant Methal have been made respondents in the case. Ranveer’s legal team appeared in the court. Ranveer Singh’s legal team appeared in the court on Monday. The hearing took place before the bench of Justice M. Nagaprasanna. The lawyer demanded urgent hearing. He said that Ranveer Singh had praised the film and the actor and the statement was misrepresented. The court raised questions on the urgent hearing. The bench asked why there should be an early hearing? Is it because the petitioner is a Bollywood actor? The court said that concrete reasons should be given for urgent hearing. After the FIR, the police issued two notices. The actor’s lawyer told in the court that after the FIR, the police has issued two notices. For this reason, immediate hearing is necessary. After hearing the arguments, the court fixed the hearing on the petition on Tuesday. Let us tell you that the controversy started in Goa last year. Ranveer Singh was present at the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI). During this, he praised Rishabh Shetty’s acting in the film Kantara: Chapter 1. At the event he had said that he watched the film in the theatre. Rishabh’s performance was brilliant, especially the scene when a female soul enters the body. Complainant Prashant Methal alleged that the comment was objectionable. According to him, the statement referred to Goddess Chamundi as a ‘female ghost’, which hurt religious sentiments. Methal had earlier filed a complaint at High Grounds Police Station on December 3, 2025. FIR was not registered at that time. Later he also applied to the Deputy Commissioner of Police and the Police Commissioner. When no action was taken, the complainant approached the court. He filed a private complaint under section 223. The complaint cited sections 196, 299 and 302 of the Indian Judicial Code (BNS). The complainant said that this is a cognizable and punishable offence. This can result in imprisonment of up to three years or a fine. At the same time, on January 28, the Magistrate Court ordered an investigation into the matter. The court issued directions under section 175(3) of BNS. According to this, it is necessary for the police to register an FIR before starting the investigation. After the court order, High Grounds Police registered an FIR and a notice was sent to Ranveer Singh. Ranveer had apologized regarding the matter. Ranveer Singh had publicly apologized regarding the matter. Ranveer had written on his Instagram account – My intention was to highlight Rishabh’s brilliant performance in the film (Kantara). Being an actor, I know how much hard work goes into pulling off that particular scene the way he did and I respect him immensely for that. I have always had deep respect for every culture, tradition and faith of our country. If anything I said has hurt anyone’s sentiments, I sincerely apologize.
