All the evidence, including the gun and tooth pieces, was seized by the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department and on this basis Phil was arrested. After his arrest he said, I did not intend to kill him. When this case went to court, Phil started trying to tarnish Lana’s image in his defense. She said that she was a struggling actress and wanted to take advantage of her. It was also argued that she committed suicide in Phil’s house. The police investigation clearly stated that Lana had no history of self-harm and no suicide note was found from the spot. Based on the police report, circumstances and postmortem, the death was ruled a homicide. The first trial lasted six months, but the jury could not reach any decision. Therefore it was declared a mistrial. The trial started again after a year. This time in 2009, Phil Spector was convicted of second-degree murder. He also received additional punishment for the use of a gun in the crime. On May 29, 2009, he was sentenced to 19 years to life imprisonment. He spent almost 11 years in jail. He died in jail on 16 January 2021. He was 81 years old and it was reported that his death was due to Covid-19.
