The film O Romeo has been released recently and is being liked a lot among the audience. Hussain Dalal has played the character of ‘Chhotu’ in the film, in which he has shown his natural acting ability. Hussain is often shy and quiet, but for this film he overcame his fear and sent a direct message to director Vishal Bhardwaj, after which he got the opportunity. Working with Shahid Kapoor in the film was a dream come true experience for him. Dainik Bhaskar had a special conversation with Hussain Dalal, in which he spoke openly about his film journey, experiences on the sets and personal struggles. Your film is doing well at the box office. First of all, want to know how you got access to this script? Sujaat Saudagar, who is a director, had made a festival film called The Underbug, in which Ali Fazal and I were in the lead roles. He had prepared this film a few years ago and it was shown in various festivals. Vishal Bhardwaj sir saw this film three-four years ago and he liked it very much. His praise and his message about the film came to me. I don’t usually direct message anyone for work, but this time I gathered courage and messaged him. Sir replied to me with great courtesy and respect. After this I was called for the test. I took the test and waited for the results for a few months. Then suddenly I got a call and was told that I have been selected in the film. This was a big opportunity for me and a dream come true experience. When you got the script, what came to your mind? You said that you have to do this story, were your expectations fulfilled? I just wanted to work in Vishal Bhardwaj’s film. If they had said that you will just play the role of a car, I would have done that also with full confidence. This experience was very special for me. How was your experience on the set during the shooting? How was it for you to work with Vishal Bhardwaj sir and be part of your dream film? When I saw the movie Maqbool, I was only 15-16 years old and that movie impressed me a lot. I wondered if this would ever happen to me too. 20 years later, in 2024, I was working with Vishal Bhardwaj sir. It was a dream come true experience for me. Every moment on the set was an opportunity to learn and experience excellence up close. Was there any scene during the shooting that was both challenging and memorable for you? There is a scene in which Shahid Kapoor fights with goons on the road and then I come. After that we dance. There were five emotions in it, anger, crying, laughing and then dancing. It was shot in a single day and night. This was the most difficult and most memorable scene for me. How was the experience of working with Shahid Kapoor for you? How did he guide you and help you in your preparation? Shahid Kapoor is a brilliant actor and a complete team player. He guided me in many ways whether it was understanding the character graph, doing different trials, or improving in rehearsals. Shahid always helped me in a patient and supportive manner. Working with him was an experience like a master class for me, where I closely experienced the nuances of acting and teamwork. Success or stardom is not a priority for Shahid. He always focuses on excellence and quality, and simply puts his all into his work. Seeing this also inspired me that real art is not measured only by name or success but by hard work and dedication. What is your opinion on the cutting in the film and the changes made by CBFC? We were not shown our entire film to the public. The public did not see the uncut version. So it doesn’t matter much. How did your film and acting journey begin? How was the journey from childhood to entering the industry? I started in very childhood. I was only 15 years old when I finished school and entered theatre. Theater gave me my first experience and guidance in art. After this, I have been working in theater continuously for 20 years. Gradually, through theater experience and hard work, I was able to enter the film industry as well. The path was not easy, there were times when there were tough times, there were challenges, but with consistent hard work and time everything fell into place. This is the basis of my journey, struggle, patience and dedication towards art.
