92-year-old green activist among Padma winners

New Delhi: Kerala’s Kollakkail Devaki Amma Ji (92) is among the ‘unsung heroes’ selected for this year’s Padma Award for their consistent work in environmental conservation.Amma has been honored for her forestry work in the state. He transformed the coastal sandy land of Alappuzha into a living sanctuary and created a dense green cover with over 3,000 rare native and medicinal plants.Others who have received Padma Shri awards as Green Warriors include Gambir Singh Yonjon, an educationist and social activist from Darjeeling, West Bengal. Founder of the Himalayan Science Association, he contributed to the establishment of Singalila and Neora Valley National Parks.Third on the list is Haley Warr, a social activist from Meghalaya who revived the Khasi Living Root Bridge in Cherrapunji. He has strengthened environmental heritage and mentored many families in root bridge weaving and environmental protection.Mohan Nagar from MP received Padma Shri for his dedicated environmental work. He built 75 tapti forests and 75,000 water structures across 75 hills and planted thousands of trees of indigenous species.
