The CCTV of the house became the biggest clue in the police investigation. At the time of the incident, the camera inside the house was found switched off from 2 pm to 4 pm. In the CCTV footage outside, daughter-in-law Ranjana was seen leaving the house with her boyfriend Rajan Sharma. During interrogation it came to light that Ranjana and Rajan were in a love affair for the last four years. Daughter Anshika also told the police that her mother was “very close” to Rajan, and there were regular fights in the house over this issue. Elder daughter Anshika had gone to her maternal uncle’s house in Unnao. Taking advantage of this opportunity, first the CCTV inside the house was switched off, then the mother-in-law was controlled, her hands and legs were tied and she was strangulated. After the murder, both of them got out of the car. When the son returned home and saw his grandmother’s dead body, he screamed and called his mother.
