JAMMU: Security forces killed three terrorists during a gunfight in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district, intensifying a week-long hunt through dense jungle and steep terrain, officials said on Sunday.The battle began in the Chatru forest area of Kishtwar, where the joint teams moved based on intelligence that pointed to terrorists hiding in a mud house. As the search parties closed in, the terrorists opened fire, setting off hours of fighting.Two militants were killed in the initial operation. A third body was recovered from a hidden hideout later in the evening, officials said. Authorities are yet to confirm their identities. Army seized arms and ammunition including three AK-47 rifles.The CIF Delta Army unit, working with J&K Police and CRPF, led the operation. A spokesman for the White Knight Corps said the troops “dominated” the site and were redeployed after communications were re-established on Sunday morning.Udhampur and Kishtwar districts have seen repeated gunfights since mid-January, killing several terrorists, including three on February 4. The latest move came under a single ongoing operation, code-named Operation Trashy-I, launched on January 18 after a paratrooper was killed and seven soldiers injured in a gunfight.The sweep followed multiple contacts last month as forces tracked a group believed to be moving between Sonar, Jansir-Kandiwar, Dachan and nearby highlands. A hideout was discovered on 19 January, intensifying search and firing efforts. The Northern Command said operations will continue to deny terrorists sanctuary.
