241 Delhi roads to be revamped by 2026-end; wall-to-wall carpeting to enhance lifespan: CM | India News
New Delhi: The Delhi government will rehabilitate 400 km of roads by the end of the year, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on Tuesday. According to officials, over 241 major roads have been identified for reconstruction at a cost of Rs 802 crore under the government’s Comprehensive Road Development Scheme. “The project is a significant step towards making the capital safer, more organized and future-ready. All roads will be constructed under wall-to-wall carpeting model so that construction work is not partial, but carried out across the full width with uniform quality,” Gupta said. Technical evaluation of base layer of each road, necessary reinforcement and proper drainage with prescribed standards shall be provided. This will help reduce waterlogging during the monsoon season and ensure long-term road safety, he added. The Chief Minister said that unlike the common practice of repairing only the central part of the road or isolated potholes, which lead to deterioration after a short period of time, under the new system, entire stretches will be uniformly reinforced from end to end, increasing durability and lifespan. “The project is targeted for completion by the end of the year. The work will be done in phases to minimize vehicular disruption and public inconvenience. A completely level and sealed surface across the entire width will lead to reduction in dust and air pollution as damaged roads generate loose soil and fine particles that become airborne.” The total cost of the project is Rs 802.18 crore. Of this, Rs 643.36 crore will be financed through the Central Road Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) and the remaining Rs 158.82 crore will be spent by the Delhi government.
