Periods are a natural body cleansing process of women’s body which comes approximately every 28-30 days. Period dates are different for every woman, but one thing is very famous among the women living together in PG, hostel, flat or the same house, ‘My periods have come, so now yours will also be about to come’. In the language of science, this is called McClintock Effect or menstrual synchrony. In fact, for years it has been believed that pheromones (a type of chemical) released from the bodies of women living together affect each other’s period cycle. But is this really true or just a coincidence? Know what modern research and doctors say about this.

What is the McClintock effect?

clevelandclinic According to, the theory of simultaneous periods was first given by psychologist Martha McClintock in 1971. In 1971, Martha conducted a study on 135 college students and claimed that the dates of the periods of girls who were roommates or close friends started getting closer to each other over time. This means that women who live close to each other, their ovulation time gradually starts becoming similar.

According to them, the pheromones released through sweat through the air trigger the hormonal system of the other woman due to which the timing of ovulation and period starts changing and starts ‘syncing’.

What does the doctor say?

According to Dr. Nupur Gupta, Senior Consultant, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurgaon, ‘It has not been scientifically proven that the period cycles of girls or women living together in hostel, PG or house are the same. This is completely a coincidence.

The timing of each woman’s period cycle is different, so it is natural for the dates to match or overlap with time. This does not at all mean that the body or periods are in sync with each other.

In the study by Oxford University and period-tracking app ‘Clue’, data of about 360 girls or women (who lived together) were analyzed. It was found that instead of the periods of most women coming together, there was more gap in their period cycles. Researchers say that no solid scientific basis has been found for period syncing.

National Library of Medicine In a study published in 2006, research was done on 186 Chinese girls who lived together. In which it was revealed that the visible sync can mostly be understood as a mathematical coincidence and natural variation of the cycle.

Lifestyle is the real reason

Dr. Nupur says, the reason behind period dates coming closer to each other may not be pheromones, but lifestyle related things may be more responsible. Women living together or close together often feel the same stress. Their eating habits and physical activity also remain almost the same.

This common routine of theirs affects the hormonal balance. Research shows that if two friends are following the same diet and workout, then it is possible that their hormones may have similar effects. This is the reason why sometimes the dates of periods come closer, which people consider as ‘sinking’.

Experts believe that every woman’s period cycle is different. Some are of 21 days and some are of 35 days. When two or three women have different cycle lengths, their period dates are bound to overlap at some point in the month. It would be more correct to call it not a ‘sync’, but a ‘coincidence’.
