Reliance bought Russian flagship grade Ural oil at prices ranging from a $1 discount to a $1 premium over global crude benchmark Brent.
India is the world’s third largest oil importer and imports about 40 percent of its oil from the Middle East through the Gulf of Hormuz.
33 million barrels of Russian oil can reach India this month
Amid American discounts, Indian refiners are purchasing Russian crude oil indiscriminately. According to commodity analytics firm Kpler, about 33 million barrels of oil is likely to reach India this month. Due to the Iran war, the price of oil has reached above $100 per barrel and in such a situation, it is a matter of relief for Russian oil to come to India on a large scale.
According to Kepler, India imported 29 million barrels of oil from Russia in February. Nikhil Dubey, senior research analyst of refining and modeling at Kepler, said, ‘Indian refiners are increasing the purchase of Russian crude oil after the recent US exemption. We are now seeing that many crude oil tankers are indicating to unload their oil at Indian ports in the next few days. Especially those tankers which were earlier in the sea and had no fixed destination.
According to Kepler AIS projection data, out of the 33 million barrels arriving this month, Indian refiners have already purchased 10 million barrels while the remaining 23 million barrels are likely to be loaded this month.
Controversy in America regarding discount in Russian oil purchase
Opposition Democrat MPs in the US Parliament demand that the Trump administration immediately withdraw the exemption given to India in the ban on Russian oil.
Representative Sam Liccardo from California and Senator Ruben Gallego from Arizona have written a letter in this regard to Treasury Secretary Scott Besant. He said in the letter, ‘Your recent decision of giving 30 days relaxation is dangerous and suicidal which you cannot justify in any way. This exemption is like giving direct benefit to the enemy.
