Tariq Rahman’s party Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has won a big victory in the elections held on February 12 in Bangladesh. Rahman is going to take oath as Prime Minister on Tuesday, 17 February.
Meanwhile, Tariq Rehman’s foreign affairs advisor Humayun Kabir told India-bangladesh Has commented on the Ganga Water Treaty. He has said that Bangladesh will take the decision to renew the 1996 Ganga Water Treaty on the basis of its ‘national interest’.
The Ganga Water Treaty signed in 1996 is to be renewed by December this year. Now a new government is being formed in Bangladesh and it is believed that the issue of renewing the treaty will be included in the bilateral talks.
Kabir said that earlier Bangladesh has often been told about the interests of those Indian states which are related to river water agreements. Making clear the stance of his incoming new government, he said, ‘We will move forward in such a way that our national interest is fulfilled.’
After Sheikh Hasina left power in Bangladesh in August 2024, there have been large-scale communal incidents in which Hindus have been targeted. The lynching case of Hindu youth Dipu Das shook the whole world.
Along with attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh, their temples have also been targeted. But instead of speaking on this issue, Humayun Kabir commented on India itself. In an interview to The Hindu, Kabir said that communal incidents in India are a ‘matter of concern’ for Bangladesh.
Kabir said, ‘Communal violence in India is a matter of concern. The people of Bangladesh feel that India is becoming an intolerant society and elections are being won there with the help of fundamentalist rhetoric, which is worrying.
He said that Jamaat-e-Islami could not come to power in Bangladesh because it resorted to fundamentalist rhetoric. Kabir said, ‘Elections can never be won in Bangladesh with such rhetoric, but in India people are voting in its favor.’
Bangladesh has often accused the Border Security Force (BSF), which guards the border, of killing its citizens. Bangladeshi infiltrators try to enter India illegally. Kabir said that such incidents affect relationships.
Along with this, he said that India should accept the current political reality of Bangladesh that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Awami League are no longer present in the politics of the country.
